If you’ve been following along, you’re probably tired of me saying, “I love fall!” But, I do love fall, so here is a fun post all about fall decor for those hard reach, hard to decorate spaces.
We have a vaulted ceiling in our living room and kitchen, which we love. This gives a lot of space above our kitchen cabinets, as well as having two designated decorative nook spaces, to feature some really fun decorations. We have only one problem.
What do we put there?
We’ve lived in our house for about 10 months. My husband and I have talked numerous times about what to put there. I know some people put vases in those types of spaces, but I don’t feel like we’re vase-type people (is that even a thing?). So, they’ve sat empty. We did put a wine cork “K” on top of our cabinets, but in comparison to the amount of space we have, it wasn’t much. Cue my favorite phrase right now….I love fall! Soooo, what better things to put in the empty decorative nooks and empty above-cabinet space?
We have a relatively new Hobby Lobby store in our town, which is really not a great thing for my husband because I go there when I’m bored. Shop Hobby Lobby’s Ad to Save Now! I took my best friend with me and we left Piper with Daddy. We were in the store for maybe 30 minutes and I had found everything I wanted to use for decorating.
Above the cabinets, I really wanted a focal point in the middle of our far wall. Something that was a little taller than the rest of the items. I found an awesome wooden sign with the quote, “Together is a wonderful place to be.” From there, we picked out leaves and pumpkins (fall decor must-haves). Mel, my bestie, LOVES sunflowers and they had them all over the store, so we couldn’t leave without them. I really love the “vase” we found to put them in. Maybe we are vase people, after all.
Leaves, pumpkins, sunflowers and more
The candles in the corner are a favorite of mine. I love how the cream candles standout against the brown and red candle holders and the orange leaves all around. They look sort of elegant, especially sitting next to the glass cake stand my husband’s grandmother gave me. I received it as a gift last Christmas and it is very special to me. I love that is gets to be displayed. Above the last set of cabinets we decorated, we placed a small brown wheel barrel with fall leaves inside.
For the decorative nooks, we found a “thankful” wooden sign and the word “FALL,” as pumpkins. We also got a slightly different decorative fall leaf garland which has more green in it to match the pumpkin leaves. I, especially, like the wooden “thankful” sign we found. I really like how it looks with our gray walls and white trim. It just looks like it was meant to be there. That sign could become part of our regular decorating. I think it would work all year.
Overall, we love it! The bright orange pops off of the dark cabinets and gray walls really well. I think it looks really nice. We’ve gotten quite a few compliments on it. We did it really early in the season, too, so the fall decor will get to stay up there for a while. We won’t look to change it for the holidays until after Thanksgiving, now.
Another huge plus of decorating above the cabinets is that our 16 month old can’t touch them and use them as toys. We don’t really decorate anywhere that she can reach because it doesn’t end up lasting. Above-cabinet decorating solves that problem.
